Our History
Monona Academy of Dance was first opened as Jean’s School of Dance in New Glarus in the fall of 1948 under the direction of Jean Zwiefel. The studio changed its name to Monona Academy of Dance in 1973 when Jean and her daughter JoJean created a studio owner partnership. Ms. JoJean performed with Milwaukee Ballet, Melody Top Summer Stock and is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee in InterArts (Dance, Music, and Theater) with a focus on education.
In the 1990’s Jean and JoJean added a dancewear store, La Boutique. The boutique has its own space within the Madison location of Monona Academy of Dance. An independent business the store prides itself on great customer service provided by staff educated in proper shoe fittings from ballet flats, jazz shoes and pointe shoes. JoJean continues her mother’s promise of providing multiple experiences through dance. Priorities are providing class experiences in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and modern. The studio offers the competition experience through the MAD City Dancers and performance opportunities through Dance Wisconsin which rehearses out of the Madison location of Monona Academy of Dance.
